3/3: Learning from a real social entrepreneur in South Africa

Concluding the journey: practical insights and reflections in workshop 3

If you have been following our social enterprise learning journey for high school learners in South Africa, you can revisit the part 1 workshop blog and the part 2 workshop blog.

On Saturday, 2 August 2025, our final workshop transitioned from theory to practice, featuring insights from Buntu Matole, the founder of the social enterprise ABCD Concepts.

Workshop 3 learning objectives

The final session focused on the long term viability and global context of social ventures:

  • Learning objective 1: Understanding the importance of sustainability in social entrepreneurship.
  • Learning objective 2: Engaging critically with a social enterprise owner regarding funding and scaling challenges.
  • Learning objective 3: Introducing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and aligning an enterprise with a specific goal.

Participant reflections from the series

The conclusion of the three part series highlighted the core takeaways shared by the participants:

“We learned about innovation by looking directly at the root cause of a problem.”

“We learned not to focus too much on the problem itself, but rather on how to turn that problem into a solution.”

“We learned to be open and curious, and to constantly try to find new ways to look at things.”
